A boiler that has been running for a long time is sure to have soot deposits on its tubes and furnace.

This is especially prominent in boilers using heavy fuel oil for burning. Although the fuel will be heated and filtered before combustion, it still contains a lot of impurities. The by-products of combustion as well as imperfect combustion cause the soot to form. The soot is deposited on the heating surfaces.

During the combustion of the fuel oil in a steam boiler, hot gases are formed. These hot gases are used to heat up the water in the boiler to form steam.

With the deposits of soot, a lot of the heat energy is not able to be transferred to the water, but instead is lost through the chimneystack. The soot layer acts as a heat insulator for the tubes and shells of the furnace. The heat is unable to reach the water.

This not only causes the boiler efficiency to be lowered, but a more serious problem can also occur. The soot can catch fire!

A soot fire can be detrimental to the strength of the boiler because it can cause serious localized hotspots to occur at the tubes. These localized hotspots can even reach temperatures that weaken the materials of the tubes.

Soot blowers are installed to blow away these soot deposits. Steam is normally used as a medium for blowing away the soot.

The operation of the soot blowers goes like this:

1. Steam is channeled to the soot blower pipeline.
2. The operator of the soot blower will open a drain valve to drain off any water in the steam. This is to make sure that the steam going through the soot blower is dry.
3. Once the steam is considered dry, the drain valve is shut off, and the soot blower is turned. Most soot blowers are constructed in such a way that when it is rotated, a steam port is uncovered and steam can enter into it.
4. The steam shoots out from the soot blower tube that is inside the boiler fireside. Many small holes for the steam to emerge are drilled along the length of the tube. As the tube rotates, the position of the steam jet will also move with it. After a full rotation, all the areas around the soot blower tube should be clear of soot. (However, it depends on how thick the soot is, the speed at which the soot blower is rotated, and how efficient the soot blowing is)
5. After completing the soot blowing, the steam supply is shut off again.

The operation of the soot blower can be done manually or by remotely controlled motor drive. A motor driven soot blower will usually include some means of turning manually in case the motor fails.

The soot that is blown away from the heat transfer surfaces of the boiler will be carried together with the hot gases out through the chimneystack.

If there is a dust collector, the soot will be caught by it, otherwise it goes out to the environment as particles of carbon and ash.

Folks, hold your breath!

Until next time…

Your niche? What a word huh, but it’s the one thing that can make you more money than you can imagine!

Let me explain, a niche is something you create or improve that solves a problem or helps make things easier on people, which is directed to a specific audience.

Ways of finding your niche is looking at yourself and others, what do you need help in or something you would like made easier?

Once you figure it out start doing research on that specific topic, or what ever it is you discovered. One way is to find what other people are doing and improve it, make it better, faster, easier or what ever but don’t copy it!

There are all types of niches you could find, take for instance, I know a man that discovered a niche about Meeting And Attracting Women, and wrote a guide called “The Complete Beginners Guide To Meeting And Attracting Women”, and started a members site which to my understanding is doing quite well!

This person found some secret that he improved on and made it available to all men looking to better their pick up skills! And now he is making money off the one thing we have all done at one time or another (whether we were good at it or not;)) he found his niche and dominated it!

Another is a site about how to eliminate bad breath! “Called The Bad Breath Report”, he came up with a unique report that reveals surefire remedies for annihilating bad breath using household ingredients you already have!

He has a targeted audience, this is his niche, and he created a way to help people solve the problem of bad breath and is doing quite well with his idea…

You must meet their unique needs. The benefits you promise must have special appeal to the niche. What can you provide that’s new and compelling? Identify the unique needs of your potential audience, and look for ways to tailor your product or service to meet them.

Who knows you may be sitting on a lucrative untapped niche market, right under your nose…without even knowing it. The secret is first knowing if the niche you are interested in is viable. Knowing if you can make money in it, and how, this is what you must discover.

Then you must know the internet marketing strategies that work for your niche, naturally, when you start a new endeavor, you want to make sure you’re on the right track… that you’re going in the right direction, you want to make sure your, not putting all your time and effort into something that doesn’t give you a strong return for the time and effort that you put into it!

When you find the one thing you are good at or can improve, don’t stop there keep trying to better it and improve on it to stay ahead of your competition!

If you do that, you will have dominated your niche!

A store that sells husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband.

Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates.

You may visit the store ONLY ONCE!

There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights.

There is, however, a catch …. you may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband . .

On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 – These men have jobs and love the Lord.

The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 – These men have jobs, love the Lord, and love kids.

The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 – These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking.

“Wow,” she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads:
Floor 4 – These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop-dead good looking and help with the housework.

“Oh, mercy me!” she exclaims, “I can hardly stand it!”

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads:
Floor 5 – These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop-dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 6 – You are visitor 4,363,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store. Watch your step as you exit the building, and have a nice day!

Today, I have an article about safety interlocks in steam boilers. When we operate steam boilers, there will be times when things can go very wrong. These are the times when we really need an automatic shut-off of the boilers, otherwise there will be a disaster. An exploding boiler is very serious!

No less serious on the business environment is when customers become extremely angry with your products or service. I can fully understand that, nobody’s perfect. Dealing with angry customers can also be a harrowing experience if we are not careful. They explode in our face and our business may even go out of control. So learning to deal with angry customers should be helpful for us.

Do you agree with me that some jobs are very stressful? Sigh! Perhaps you might find some helpful products below that might give you some relief. I think being your own boss is better than working for people.

A boiler could be potential bomb if you do not take care of it sufficiently! Because it is a fired pressure vessel, it has the potential to be pressurized beyond its designed strength if something goes wrong with the operating equipment.

Water treatment has to be done carefully to prevent corrosion and scaling that can lead to deformation, overheating, and carry over of the water.

That is on the waterside of the boiler. What about the fire side? A strong fire is burning inside the boiler. The combustion equipment of a boiler must be maintained in a tip-top condition all the time.

Bad combustion will give rise not only to reduction in combustion efficiency, but it will also result in deposits of soot. The soot tends to cover the pipes, and the steel plates. The heat transfer will be reduced, or worst still, the soot may catch fire inside the boiler.

This is especially a concern in oil fired boiler. If the atomization of the fuel is not good, or the nozzle itself leaks, an imperfect combustion will be the result. Very often, oil may drip inside the combustion chamber or may be sprayed on the boiler tubes.

Automatic boiler burners are often started using an electric spark over a fine mist of light fuel oil. If the flame does not start, the oil must not be allowed to continue to spray inside the combustion chamber, otherwise a dangerous explosive mixture of fuel and air will develop inside.

So one of the boiler safety interlocks is to cut out the boiler burner when the flame fails to ignite.

Another interlock is low burner air pressure. If the forced draft fan does not develop enough pressure, combustible gases will not be able to be driven away. This is dangerous.

The above two safety interlocks work during the starting up of the boiler. How about the times when the boiler is already in operation?

The water level interlock is one of the most important safety features. If the water level in the boiler becomes too low, perhaps due to feed water pump failure, or other reasons, some parts of the tubes, or shell that are exposed to the heat from the flame will not be cooled by the water. The temperature will rise up and the steel parts will eventually lose their strength due to the intense heat from the flame of the burner.

The safety interlocks will shut off the burners of the boiler and prevent further damage.

The steam pressure will continue to rise as long as the burners continue to burn. How do boilers maintain the steam pressure?

Think safety!

Until next time…

Most businesses come face-to-face with many angry customers. Some will be polite about their anger and simply tell you that you’re wrong, while others will…not be quite as nice. The worst thing about an angry customer is that they tend to say bad things about you to other customers. The best thing to do is to help them cool down, then do what you can to solve the problem.

First, make sure you are sincere. The customer is serious and wants you to be serious too. Next, find a way to help solve the customer’s problem. This might mean correcting a mistake, or doing the service over again. It could mean replacing a product that doesn’t work. It might even require you to give the customer a little more than you promised to.

Some customers simply want a refund. A refund is possible if you can get the product returned in good condition or if the product is inexpensive. However sometimes a refund just isn’t possible. If that is the case, make sure you explain to the customer why a refund isn’t possible. Then, make it clear to them that you will fix their problem in whatever way you can.

Talking about being effective, have you been working so hard that you have neglected your family? Well, just pause for a while and reflect on your life. The purpose of earning money by working for yourself or for other people is to enjoy a comfortable life. It defeats the purpose if you are overstressing yourself in the working process.

It does help too if you know more about yourself and find an activity that you enjoy.

That’s it, I’m off …

Hi there,

Boiler inspections are necessary in order to find out the effectiveness of the boiler water chemical treatment. It is also useful to detect any faults or potential weakness in the steel structures, plates and shells so that accidents can be avoided.

However, even entering the boiler for inspection can be a safety hazard if you are not careful!

Firstly, the heat, and the remaining steam. It is better to cool the boiler sufficiently before entry. However, sometimes, inspections have to be done in a hurry. Perhaps there is a schedule to be followed, or the steam supply cannot be stopped for a long time. Or perhaps it is very important to find out the condition of the boiler as soon as possible.

Let’s say the boiler is still warm. There isn’t sufficient time to cool it. The thick insulation materials wrapped around the boiler do their function well – containing the heat. And you are given the task to open up the manholes for inspection.

If there is a manhole at the top of the boiler and one at the bottom, which one would you open first?

Think about it! Hot air rises. Heat travels in convection currents. If you were to open the bottom manhole first and the top manhole later, you will create a channel for the flow of hot air. Hot air from the remaining steam will rise up very quickly and overwhelm you if you are at the top manhole.

So always, open the top manhole first, followed by the bottom manhole. When the hot convectional current flow, you will be at the bottom and not be harmed.

Think safety!

Until next time…
